Amazon has redesigned its entire Kindle family. The new Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Colorsoft all drop the raised bezel for a flush-front screen, get thinner and lighter, and for the first time the entry-level Kindle comes with an aluminum back.
The catch for readers here: Kenya is not on the launch list. Here is what changed, what it costs, and whether the current Paperwhite is still the smart buy in Nairobi.
What Amazon announced
Amazon unveiled the lineup on October 1, 2026, built around a new "reverse stack" display construction that it says is a first for e-readers. Every model now has a flush screen with no raised border, and the device color wraps from the back around to the front.

- Kindle (6-inch): 16GB, up to 6 weeks of battery and 30% faster book opening than the last model. From $149.99 in Ube (purple) and Graphite.
- Kindle with aluminum back: 32GB, matte housing made from 80% recycled aluminum, about 20g heavier. $189.99 in Alpine Sky and Seaglass Green.
- Kindle Paperwhite: thinner and lighter, waterproof, adjustable warm light, up to 12 weeks of battery and Amazon's highest contrast Paperwhite screen yet. 16GB from $199.99.
- Paperwhite Signature Edition: aluminum back, 32GB, auto-adjusting light, dock charging and double tap to turn pages. $249.99.
- Kindle Colorsoft: redesigned color display with edge-to-edge color. 16GB from $289.99, Signature Edition $319.99 in Graphite and Fig.
Amazon also added accessories: the Kindle Click Bluetooth page-turn remote ($34.99, works with Kindles from 2024 onward), a Page-Turn Cover with physical buttons ($79.99) and a Charging Dock ($59.99) for the Signature Editions.
The new Paperwhite is the headline

Amazon says the new Paperwhite uses an oxide thin film transistor backplane and has the largest screen and highest contrast ratio of any Paperwhite, aimed at crisp text in bright sunlight. Battery life stays at up to 12 weeks, the same headline figure as the 12th generation Paperwhite it replaces. The Paperwhite and Colorsoft are on preorder now, with shipping rolling out by region.
The biggest changes this year are design and display contrast, not reading features. If you already own a 2024 Paperwhite, there is little reason to upgrade.
What it means for Kenyan readers
Amazon's launch list covers the US, UK, much of Europe, Japan, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Egypt and Australia. Kenya is not on it, so the new models will only arrive here as imports, usually weeks after launch and with shipping and duty added to the US price.
That makes the current 12th generation Paperwhite the practical pick right now. It already has a 7-inch glare-free screen, waterproofing for the beach in Diani or a rainy matatu ride, warm light for night reading and weeks of battery life, which matters when power is unreliable. It is in stock in Nairobi today, and you can pay by M-Pesa.
One more tip: to buy Kindle books you will need a card on your Amazon account. Many Kenyan readers use a Visa or Mastercard debit card, or a virtual card such as M-Pesa GlobalPay.
Should you wait?
Wait if you want the aluminum finish, the new colors or the flush screen and do not mind import timelines. Buy the 12th generation Paperwhite now if you simply want a great e-reader with local warranty and support. The 32GB version is worth it if you keep large comic, manga or audiobook libraries on the device.
FAQ
Is the new 2026 Kindle available in Kenya?
Not officially. Amazon's launch countries do not include Kenya, so the new models will only reach Kenya as imports.
What is the difference between the new Paperwhite and the 12th Gen Paperwhite?
The new one is thinner and lighter, has a flush-front screen and higher contrast. Battery life (up to 12 weeks), waterproofing and warm light are carried over.
