How to Spot a Fake or Uncertified Phone Charger Before It Damages Your Phone

Fake chargers are common in Kenya's informal electronics market and can fry your phone's battery or worse. Here's how to tell a genuine charger from a counterfeit, and how to verify KEBS certification before you buy.

A charger that looks fine on the outside can still be dangerous on the inside. Counterfeit and uncertified chargers are common in Kenya's informal electronics market, and the internal corner-cutting — thinner wiring, missing isolation barriers, no real safety chip — is invisible until it damages your phone's battery, delivers a shock, or in rare cases starts a fire. Here's how to check what you're actually buying.

Why a "cheap charger" is a different risk than a cheap cable

A counterfeit charger isn't just a slower charger — it's a different piece of engineering. Genuine chargers use certified components and an isolation barrier that keeps mains voltage (240V in Kenya) separated from the low-voltage side that touches your phone. Independent lab testing on seized counterfeit chargers has repeatedly found that a large share fail basic electrical safety tests, meaning that barrier can fail under normal use. On the charging side, cheap USB-C cables and adapters often skip the small "e-marker" chip that negotiates safe power delivery with your phone, which can cause overheating, inconsistent charging speeds, or battery wear over time.

7 signs a charger might be fake

  1. Missing or inconsistent certification marks. Genuine chargers sold internationally carry marks like CE, FCC, or UKCA stamped cleanly into the plastic. Blurry text, misaligned logos, or a certification mark that doesn't match where the charger claims to be made are red flags.
  2. No KEBS Standardisation Mark on Kenyan retail packaging. Locally distributed electronics are required to carry the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) Standardisation Mark. If the box has no mark — or a mark that looks photocopied — treat it as unverified.
  3. A glossy, uneven plastic finish. Genuine chargers usually have a matte, uniform finish. A shiny finish with visible seams or flashing (excess plastic at the mould lines) is a common counterfeit tell.
  4. It feels light and hollow, or rattles. Pick it up and give it a gentle shake — genuine chargers are packed with components and shouldn't rattle or feel unusually light for their size.
  5. The pins or plug wobble. A properly moulded plug sits rigid in the housing. Wobbly pins suggest thin, low-grade metal.
  6. It's priced far below the going rate from an unfamiliar seller. A well-known 20–30W USB-C adapter selling for a fraction of retail from an anonymous stall or social media seller is the single strongest warning sign.
  7. It gets noticeably hot during normal charging. Genuine chargers can get warm, but a charger that's hot to the touch after a few minutes — especially with nothing plugged in but the wall — should be unplugged and not reused.

How to verify a charger sold in Kenya meets KEBS standards

KEBS runs a free verification service for its Standardisation Mark, so you don't have to guess:

  1. Look on the product packaging for the KEBS Standardisation Mark and its unique code, usually printed near the mark itself.
  2. Send that code via SMS to 20023.
  3. You'll get an instant reply confirming whether the code is genuine and registered to that product.
  4. If there's no code to check, or the packaging looks reprinted or generic, you can report suspected substandard electronics to KEBS on their toll-free line, 1545.

This takes under a minute and works for chargers, cables, power banks, and most other KEBS-regulated electronics — it's worth doing before you plug anything unfamiliar into a phone you rely on for M-Pesa, work, or school.

What to do if you're already using a charger you're unsure about

Stop using it overnight or unattended, avoid using it in a socket near flammable material, and don't use it to charge a phone with a swollen or damaged battery. If it feels hot, sparks, or smells of burning plastic when plugged in, unplug it immediately and dispose of it rather than continuing to use it. When in doubt, replacing a suspect charger with a verified one is far cheaper than replacing a phone or a battery.

FAQ

Does a genuine-looking box mean the charger inside is genuine?
Not necessarily — packaging is often the easiest part to counterfeit. Check the charger itself for finish, weight, and certification marks, and verify the KEBS code by SMS if one is present.

Can a fake charger really damage my phone's battery?
Yes. Chargers that don't properly negotiate voltage and current with your phone can deliver inconsistent power, which generates excess heat — and heat is one of the biggest accelerants of lithium battery wear over time.

Is it safe to use my phone's original cable with a third-party wall adapter?
Generally yes, as long as the adapter itself is certified and rated for your phone's charging speed. The main risk is specifically with uncertified, no-name adapters and cables, not mixing reputable brands.
