Huawei's MatePad Pro Just Went Global at 4.7mm Thin — Why It Won't Run Google Play, and What to Get Instead in Kenya
Huawei held its "Chase The Wind" launch event in Munich today, taking the MatePad Pro 2026 international after debuting it in China earlier this month. On paper it's one of the thinnest, lightest flagship tablets ever made. But for most buyers in Kenya, one missing piece of software matters more than the hardware.
What Huawei Announced Today
The MatePad Pro 12 (2026) measures just 4.7mm thick and weighs 454g, built around a 12-inch OLED display running at 3,036 x 1,952 resolution, a 144Hz refresh rate, and 1,600 nits of peak brightness. Huawei is also offering a PaperMatte Display version with an anti-glare coating aimed at note-taking and e-reading, plus optional M-Pencil Pro and Glide Keyboard accessories. In China, the tablet launched with a Kirin T93 chipset, up to 12GB RAM, 512GB storage, a 10,400mAh battery with 66W charging, and pricing starting around CNY 5,699 (roughly $843). Huawei has not yet confirmed final specs or pricing for markets outside China, including whether or when the tablet will officially reach Kenya.
The Catch: No Google Play Store
The MatePad Pro runs HarmonyOS, Huawei's own operating system, because the company remains cut off from Google Mobile Services under continuing US trade restrictions. That means no official Google Play Store, Gmail, Google Maps, or YouTube app out of the box. Huawei's own AppGallery has grown substantially, but many everyday apps Kenyan users rely on — mobile banking apps, certain M-Pesa-linked services, WhatsApp updates via Play Store, and various work and school apps — are either missing or require manual sideloading workarounds that most buyers won't want to deal with. That's a real limitation to weigh against how thin and light the hardware is.
What to Get Instead: Samsung Tablets With Full Google Access
If you want a large, high-quality tablet display without the app-ecosystem gap, Android tablets running full Google Mobile Services remain the safer buy for most people in Kenya right now. Two trewrld options cover both ends of the budget:
The Tab S9 FE+ sits closest to the MatePad Pro's price bracket, with a large 12.4-inch 2560 x 1600 display, S Pen support, and multi-window productivity features — all running standard Android with full Play Store access. The Tab A9+ is the budget route: an 11-inch 90Hz display and Quad speakers with Dolby Atmos for well under a third of the price, ideal for students and families who just want a reliable big-screen Android tablet.
The Kenya Angle
Huawei phones have a modest but real footprint in Kenya, and buyers already using AppGallery day-to-day may be comfortable with the trade-off. But for anyone whose banking apps, Safaricom or Airtel-linked services, or work tools assume Google Play, an unofficial import of a HarmonyOS tablet can mean hours spent hunting for workarounds after paying full price. Samsung's Android tablets, bought through an authorized Kenyan retailer, come with Google services working out of the box, M-Pesa-friendly checkout, and local warranty support — no import gymnastics required.
FAQ
Is the Huawei MatePad Pro 2026 available in Kenya?
Not officially yet. Huawei confirmed the global launch today (September 2, 2026) at an event in Munich, but has not announced Kenya-specific availability, pricing, or a release date.
Can you install Google Play Store on a Huawei MatePad Pro?
Not officially. Newer Huawei devices running HarmonyOS are not Play Protect certified, so there's no supported way to install the real Google Play Store — only unofficial workarounds that Huawei doesn't guarantee will keep working.
What's the best alternative tablet in Kenya right now for a similar screen size and quality?
The Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE+ is the closest match in display size and premium feel, while the Galaxy Tab A9+ covers the budget end — both run full Android with Google Play out of the box and are in stock at trewrld.
