Traveling with a power bank just got more complicated. Since 27 March 2026, new ICAO-driven rules limiting power banks to two per passenger and banning in-flight charging have rolled out across all 193 member states — including Kenya. Here is what changes for anyone flying out of JKIA, and how to pick a power bank that will not get confiscated at security.
What actually changed
Under the updated international rules, power banks are now capped at two per passenger in carry-on baggage only — they are banned outright in checked luggage. Capacity limits are strict: anything up to 100Wh travels freely, batteries between 100Wh and 160Wh need prior airline approval, and anything above 160Wh is banned entirely. You also cannot recharge a power bank in-flight or plug it into a seat's USB port or power outlet. The trigger for the crackdown was a documented case of an overhead-bin power bank causing a cabin fire on a grounded aircraft in early 2025, which pushed regulators to move fast.
How this applies to Kenya Airways and JKIA
Kenya Airways already classifies power banks as spare lithium batteries restricted to carry-on only, consistent with the global standard. Passengers flying through Jomo Kenyatta International Airport should expect security staff to check power bank capacity ratings (printed in Wh, or calculable from mAh × voltage) more closely than before. Practically: pack no more than two power banks, keep them in your daypocket or seat-accessible bag (not the overhead bin if avoidable), and skip anything unbranded with no watt-hour rating printed on the casing — that is the fastest way to get it pulled aside at the gate.
Choosing a power bank that won't cause you problems
Most everyday power banks sold in Kenya (10,000–20,000mAh) sit comfortably under the 100Wh threshold, so the new rules are mostly a hassle for people carrying high-capacity bricks for laptops or camera gear. For day-to-day phone charging and travel, a well-rated, clearly labeled unit from a known brand is the safer bet — both for airport security and for battery safety generally.
FAQ
Can I carry two power banks in one bag on Kenya Airways?
Yes, up to two power banks are generally allowed in carry-on baggage under current rules, provided each stays under the 100Wh threshold without special approval.
Can I charge my phone from my power bank during the flight?
No. Under the new global rules, in-flight recharging of power banks and devices from a power bank is restricted on most carriers — charge fully before you fly.
Will my power bank be confiscated at JKIA?
Only if it exceeds the allowed capacity, lacks a visible Wh/mAh rating, or is packed in checked luggage. Keeping it in carry-on with a clear capacity label avoids most issues.
