Sony has quietly refreshed its flagship WH-1000XM6 over-ear headphones with a new Olive Gray finish, the sixth colourway the model has shipped in since it launched in May 2025. It's a cosmetic update rather than a new generation, but it's a good moment to look at where things actually stand for noise-cancelling headphone shoppers in Kenya, since the WH-1000XM6 itself still isn't listed for local sale.
What Sony Actually Announced
The Olive Gray WH-1000XM6 (model WH-1000XM6/G) went on sale globally in early August 2026, joining the Black, Midnight Blue, Platinum Silver, Sand Pink and Sandstone options already on the market. Sony didn't change any hardware: same HD Noise Cancelling Processor, same 30-hour battery life with ANC on, same multipoint Bluetooth and adaptive noise cancelling that made the XM6 line a favourite with reviewers. The update is purely visual, right down to a matching green-and-grey carry case, though the charging cable stays black. In the US, the new colourway launched at a discounted $399, versus Sony's usual $459 asking price.
Why This Doesn't Change Much for Buyers in Nairobi
Here's the catch: the WH-1000XM6 has never been an official Sony Kenya release, and that hasn't changed with the Olive Gray version. Grey-market units do occasionally show up locally, usually at a markup and without a reliable local warranty path, which is a real risk for a headset in this price bracket. If you want genuine Sony noise cancelling with proper after-sales support in Kenya today, the WH-1000XM5 is the current flagship actually stocked here, and it remains an excellent set of headphones on its own merits.

Sony vs Bose: Which Should You Actually Pick
Both sit in a similar price band locally, so the choice comes down to what you value. The Sony WH-1000XM5 generally edges out on outright noise cancellation and detail in the sound, and its call quality is a step up thanks to Sony's multi-microphone setup. The Bose QuietComfort 45 leans towards a warmer, bass-forward tuning and a lighter clamp on the head, which some listeners find more comfortable over a full workday or a long Nairobi–Mombasa bus ride. Neither needs a firmware update to work well on Safaricom or Airtel-connected phones, since both connect over standard Bluetooth rather than the network.
FAQ
Is the Sony WH-1000XM6 available in Kenya?
Not through official channels as of this article. Any unit sold locally as "XM6" is grey-market stock and should be treated with caution, particularly around warranty support.
What's the difference between the WH-1000XM5 and WH-1000XM6?
The XM6, launched in 2025, added a folding hinge back into the design, a wider dynamic range, and improved call-noise reduction over the XM5. The XM5 remains a strong, well-reviewed set of headphones and is the version currently stocked in Kenya.
