Google has started rolling out its July 2026 monthly software update to every Pixel phone from the Pixel 6 onward, plus the Pixel Tablet and Pixel foldables. It's a quieter release than June's Android 17 rollout, but it fixes a genuinely unpleasant bug: some devices were getting stuck in a boot loop, unable to load Android at all.
What's actually in the July 2026 update
Google confirmed the fix list on its official Pixel support community forum. In the US, the build is CP2A.260705.006. Here's what it addresses:
- Boot loop fix — resolves an issue where some devices would fail to load the Android system or become stuck restarting under certain conditions.
- App crashes — fixes certain apps unexpectedly closing or failing to launch.
- Display glitches — corrects system widgets that were showing with the wrong colors or contrast.
- Foldable navigation bug — fixes navigation buttons shifting alignment after folding and unfolding a Pixel foldable.
- Wallpaper effect fix — corrects the wallpaper "shape effect" incorrectly covering the subject of a photo instead of sitting behind it.
The update is eligible for every Pixel 6, 6a, 6 Pro, 7, 7a, 7 Pro, 8, 8a, 8 Pro, 9 series, and 10 series device, along with Pixel foldables and the Pixel Tablet. Google is rolling it out gradually over the following week rather than pushing it to everyone at once.
Why the boot loop fix matters
A boot loop is one of the more stressful things that can happen to a phone: the device restarts over and over without ever finishing startup, and without a working phone you can't even check what's wrong. It wasn't affecting every Pixel, but Google's decision to list it as a dedicated "System" fix confirms it was a real issue on the June/Android 17 build, not just a rumor. If your Pixel has been randomly restarting or hanging on the boot logo since Android 17 landed, this update is the fix.
What Kenyan Pixel owners should do
Pixel updates roll out over-the-air (OTA) in stages, so not everyone gets the notification on day one. To check manually: go to Settings > System > System update > Check for update. A few Kenya-specific things worth knowing:
- Update on Wi-Fi where possible. Pixel OTA files typically run several hundred MB, which adds up fast on Safaricom or Airtel mobile data bundles.
- Buy from a source that guarantees genuine hardware. Only official Pixel units reliably receive these OTA updates on schedule — grey-market or refurbished units with altered firmware sometimes miss them entirely, which is one reason it's worth buying from a dealer who can confirm the phone is unlocked to Google's stock software.
- Don't panic if the update hasn't reached you yet. Google is staging the rollout through the week, so a delay of a few days is normal and not a sign anything is wrong with your device.
Is the July 2026 Pixel update available in Kenya?
Yes. Pixel OTA updates roll out globally at the same time, including to devices in Kenya. If you haven't received the notification yet, check manually under Settings > System > System update, or wait a few more days as Google's staged rollout continues.
My Pixel keeps restarting — will this update fix it?
If your Pixel 6 or later has been stuck in a boot loop or randomly restarting since the Android 17 update, this July patch specifically targets that issue. If your device won't boot at all, you may need to sideload the OTA image or visit a service center.
Which Pixel phones are eligible for this update?
All Pixel 6 and newer devices, including the 6a, 7 series, 8 series, 9 series, 10 series, Pixel foldables, and the Pixel Tablet.
