No mic means no accidental "always listening" concerns — a genuine draw for offices or shared family spaces in Nairobi apartments. The IP67 rating and 10-hour battery make it just as capable for a Diani beach weekend or an unplanned power cut as it is on a bookshelf at home.
Who It's Ideal For
- Buyers who want the Roam's core sound and durability without paying for voice features.
- Privacy-conscious households who'd rather not have an always-on microphone in the room.
- Anyone building a multi-speaker Sonos system on a budget, where every unit doesn't need its own mic.
Who Should Consider Something Else
- Buyers who specifically want hands-free voice control — the standard Roam 2 has a full microphone array.
- Anyone who wants Bluetooth 5.2's improved stability — Roam SL uses Bluetooth 5.0.
Pros
- Same IP67 rating and battery life as the standard Roam models at a lower price point.
- No microphone is a genuine plus for privacy-focused buyers, not just a stripped feature.
- Up to 10 days of sleep-mode standby is handy for occasional use.
Cons
- No Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, or Sonos Voice Control support.
- Bluetooth 5.0 rather than the newer 5.2 found on Roam 2.
If voice control matters to you, trewrld's Sonos Roam 2 adds Sonos Voice Control, Amazon Alexa, and Bluetooth 5.2 on top of the same waterproof design — worth the extra spend if you'll actually use hands-free playback.
"Been a loyal client since 2017 and still counting for all electronics." — Vic Max, Google review
Verdict: Roam SL is the smart pick for buyers who want everything that makes the Roam line good — waterproofing, battery life, dual connectivity — without paying for a microphone they won't use. At KES 31,500 it's a genuinely sensible middle ground in the Roam range.
What's different about the Sonos Roam SL versus the standard Roam?
Roam SL is the microphone-free variant — it has no voice assistant support, while the waterproof design, dual WiFi/Bluetooth connectivity, battery life, and Sonos app control are shared with the standard Roam.
Can I still use the Sonos app with Roam SL?
Yes — Roam SL connects to home WiFi and is fully controllable through the Sonos app, including AirPlay 2 streaming; it simply can't respond to voice commands.
Is Roam SL waterproof like the standard Roam?
Yes, Roam SL carries the same IP67 rating — dust-tight and submersible in up to 1 metre of water for 30 minutes.
