When fibre or the office Wi-Fi drops in Nairobi, a pocket MiFi keeps your Zoom calls and M-Pesa business running, and the built-in battery keeps it going through load-shedding. Because you insert your own SIM, you can pick the data bundle that gives the best coverage where you are, whether that is the CBD, a field trip or upcountry.
Who It's Ideal For
- Remote workers and freelancers who need backup internet
- Travellers and field teams working outside the office
- Students and small teams sharing one data bundle
- Households in areas without fibre
Who Should Consider Something Else
- Heavy users who stream or download all day: mobile data bundles get expensive, so fibre suits better
- Large offices: 10 connected devices at 2.4GHz will not cover a busy workplace
- Off-grid users with no mobile coverage, who would need a satellite kit instead
Pros
- Small and light enough for a pocket
- Up to 8 hours of battery and 10 device connections
- Wide LTE band support across FDD and TDD
- Simple setup and app management
Cons
- 2.4GHz Wi-Fi only
- Performance depends on your SIM's network coverage and data bundle
If you want a mains-powered SIM router for home or office, the TP-Link TL-MR3420 (KES 4,800) works with a 3G/4G USB modem. For remote homesteads or places with no mobile signal at all, the SpaceX Starlink Mini (KES 36,000) is a different class of solution.
